Dr. Jordan D. Boyd, D.M.A. (he/him) is Assistant Director of Choral Activities at the University of Texas at San Antonio, where he conducts the UTSA Concert Choir and University Chorus, serves as music director for UTSA Lyric Theatre productions, and teaches courses in vocal technique, choral literature, and graduate conducting.
Boyd is passionate about creating concert experiences that feel meaningful, imaginative, and engaging for both performers and audiences. His work often crosses disciplinary boundaries, bringing choral music into conversation with other fields. Recent projects include Interstellar (2022), a collaboration with the UTSA Department of Physics and Astronomy that paired choral music with imagery from the James Webb Space Telescope, and Existential (2024), created in partnership with the UTSA School of Art. These immersive performances invite audiences to experience choral music in new and unexpected ways.
In addition to his work at UTSA, Boyd serves as Artistic Director of IlluMen, a professional tenor-bass ensemble based in San Antonio. He is proud to be part of the city’s vibrant choral community and regularly works with local and regional ensembles through clinics and guest appearances throughout Texas.
Before joining the UTSA faculty, Boyd completed his doctoral studies at the University of North Texas, where he directed the UNT Chorale. Under his leadership, the ensemble was named the Winner of the American Prize in Choral Performance (college/university division) in 2022. He also served as Assistant Conductor of the Dallas Symphony Chorus under Joshua Habermann. Earlier in his career, Boyd held leadership positions with the Charleston Symphony Orchestra Chorus and the Taylor Festival Choir, and directed award-winning middle and high school choral programs in Charleston, South Carolina.
An active singer, Boyd has performed with professional ensembles including the Orpheus Chamber Singers, Verdigris Ensemble of Dallas, the Cincinnati Vocal Arts Ensemble, the San Antonio Chamber Choir, and the Taylor Festival Choir. His musical interests also extend to opera and musical theatre, and he enjoys composing choral music for ensembles at all levels.
Dr. Boyd holds a Bachelor’s degree in Vocal Performance and Music Theory/Composition from the College of Charleston, a Master of Music in Choral Conducting from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, and a Doctor of Musical Arts in Choral Conducting from the University of North Texas.
